By Mark Macias
I just finished reading a book by PT Barnum on business. The Art of Money Getting provides many lessons on life, business, values and money. It also provides some strategy on PR.
PT Barnum was a master showman at publicity. He created the “Greatest Show on Earth – Barnum & Bailey Circus. He was also a successful entrepreneur who knew publicity better than anyone.
One of Barnum’s lessons from his book stood out to me and hit home as a publicist and business owner. He wrote:
“If you hesitate, some bolder hand will stretch out before you and get the prize. Remember the proverb of Solomon: ‘He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand; but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.’”
Let’s do PR later this Year
I had a video call with a CEO a few weeks ago. He wanted to hear how PR could work for his business after his board chairman said him he wanted to see his business on CNN. I gave the CEO a detailed media strategy and I could see him taking detailed notes on everything I said. I wasn’t worried about sharing the strategy. PR is about execution. An idea won’t get your brand on CNN. A PR campaign requires more strategy and depth than I can share in this one post.
You Want to be First in PR
That CEO told me he was going to revisit PR in the fall. He didn’t heed PT Barnum’s advice from this above post.
It’s a shame because the unique value of PR comes from being first. Reporters are more interested when your business is unique. Several years ago, MACIAS PR ran the media campaign for the world’s biggest dating site. It was easier to get publicity then because there weren’t a million dating apps, like there are today.
The more competitors that enter your field, the more you need to stand out from the competition. In addition, consumers will remember your brand or product more when it is first. We remember what is unique.
Publicity is a requirement for all business, including this firm. (Click here to read a story in the Sunday New York Post). We’re now pushing a story to real estate writers on our home. How does that relate to PR? As PT Barnum wrote in his book, every business needs to continually push his brand in front of customers. If you wait for another day, you give your competitor a chance to take the prize. Be bold. If you want to hear more about our strategy, send me a message and I’ll give you a customized media strategy for your business.
